Report on Montreal Impact trialist Marco Donadel

The Montreal Impact have invited Serie A veteran Marco Donadel on a 10-day training period with the club.

Gabriele Maltinti

Not officially tagged as a trialist when it was announced by the Montreal Impact but Marco Donadel has joined the Impact at Stade Saputo for a 10-day training period. The Serie A veteran completed his first practice hoping to make a good impression and get an eventual contract offer.

He quickly denied that  he already signed a MLS contract with the club stating that reports from Italy were not correct.

Talking to Conor Dawley of the Siren Song (Napoli's SBNation site) , Donadel does not seem as sexy as his wikipedia page.

Donadel is a defensive-minded midfielder who in his best days with Fiorentina was an above-average holding mid in Serie A, but those days are long behind him. Injuries and a general downhill slide in his effectiveness have left him as a mediocre-at-best player these days.

Warning #1: Injury prone and mediocre play of late.

He was released by Napoli at the end of this summer's transfer window after the Italian club tried to ''literally give him away to another club came to naught''

I see MLS as a great league. It's improving every year Donadel after his first practice with the Impact

As a 31 year-old, Donadel has quite a few years of competitive soccer but his play with Hellas Verona last season (22 games/1 goal) was not deemed to be great.

Conor adds that Donadel

doesn't move well, he doesn't pass well, he doesn't defend as well as he once did, and even by MLS' standards, he wouldn't be a very good fit for Montreal.

Donadel looks a OK backup option for the bleu-blanc-noir as it looks to add more depth and quality. With a youth movement happening at the club (Mallace, Bissue), aren't there younger and cheaper options? or at least with a more recent track record in club play.
