The Montreal Impact and Toronto Fc will face off against each other in the Canadian Championship final for a chance to win the Voyageurs Cup and a berth into the CONCACAF Champions League.
The Impact and Toronto FC have faced each other two previous times in the Canadian Championship final both being won by the Impact, one in 2008 and the other in 2014. Now both teams are completely different and on paper, Toronto seems to have the edge over the Impact coming into this year's final.
Due to the restructuring of the CONCACAF Champions League, the winner of the 2017 Canadian Championship will advance to a playoff against Toronto FC, the winner of the 2016 Canadian Championship, to be hosted by Toronto FC on August 9, 2017, for a place in the 2018 CONCACAF Champions League. If Toronto FC were to win the 2017 Canadian Championship then no playoff game will be necessary, and Toronto will have earned a place in the 2018 CONCACAF Champions League automatically.
The two-legged final will take place on June 21 & June 27, one game at Stade Saputo and one game at BMO field.
Toronto FC vs Montreal Impact 2008 Final
Back in 2008 the Canadian Championship only had three teams in the tournament The Montreal Impact, Toronto FC & Vancouver WhiteCaps. Since you can't have a knockout system with three teams in a tournament each team would play each other two times and the winner would be decided by goal differential, most goals scored & most away goals. The Montreal Impact ended up winning bu getting seven points in four games.
Toronto FC vs Montreal Impact 2014 Final
Montréal Impact won a second consecutive Voyageurs Cup by beating Toronto FC 1-0 in the second leg of the 2014 Amway Canadian Championship.
