Didier Drogba involved in another penalty kick drama : Columbus Crew meltdown

Didier Drogba's klout is not to be underestimated

Greg Bartram-USA TODAY Sports

It is not the first time in Montreal Impact history that drama surrounds a penalty kick taken against the Montreal Impact. One player has had such influence on penalty kicks that it has changed the outcome of the kick last year. And on a crazy Saturday night in Ohio, the outcome of the game was altered...forever.

It was in the fall of 2015, Sacha Klejstan was about to take an important penalty kick.

Then Drogba happened.

Ca a marché, it worked. That is what Didier Drogba said to french central defender Damien Perrinnelle after the miss. What did not work is that the New York Red Bulls went on to win 2-1 at Red Bull Arena.

But Drogba learned from this experience and understood that one does not need to be that involved to play mind games.

I have never seen such a public meltdown between 2 teammates over a penalty kick. The ensuing post-game press conference by Kei Kamara was quite astonishing and shocking in the raw nature of the comments.

Scoring that penalty kick cost Columbus and the mental breakdown ensued as the Impact came back from a 3-goal deficit to tie the game 4-4.

Merci Didier.

Time for the Drogba happy dance!!
