Impact fall 2-0 to the Whitecaps in Voyageurs Cup Final

The Whitecaps have finally won their first the Amway Canadian Championship while the Impact continue a free-fall on the pitch.

Anne-Marie Sorvin-USA TODAY Sports

A man down for 60 minutes, a new-look 4-3-3 formation , sans Ignacio Piatti were all factors that could be used as excuses to explain the defeat. But the worst thing about a 2-0 defeat to the Vancouver Whitecaps is that the Impact needed to play well and boost its confidence to take head first a difficult second half of the season.

There were two games tonight. The first in the opening 30 minutes, then after that it was a different story. It's tough and unfortunate to play with 10-men for 60 minutes. "We moved the ball well in the beginning, but the cards changed things. It's disappointing.

--  Frank Klopas

That quote should be enough to summarize how the Impact brass perceived the defeat that probably had a sour taste.

Both Whitecaps' goals were well deserved after an assist from Nigel Reo-Coker to his old team giving way to Cristian Techera , whose shot was stopped by Eric Kronberg, only to see Octavio Rivero tap in the ball.

Later in the second half, defender Tim Parker , marked loosely by Johan Venegas , heads the ball into the net off a corner kick.

Amway Canadian Championship - Finals Leg 2 - Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2:0 Montreal Impact

Overall, the Impact had a pretty awful game after Victor Cabrera's red card who usually does not mind accumulating yellow cards but was not aware of Petrescu's tendency to give them away quite easily. But it does not explain the poor play displayed by the team overall who seemed to have lost confidence in its capacity to generate anything close to a scoring chance (zero shots on goals).

The Impact travels to Toronto directly from Vancouver to face Toronto FC for a 4pm Saturday game at BMO field.
