There was a lot of speculation whether or not Frank Klopas would possibly trade up and swap picks with OCSC in order to get Canadian International Cyle Larin, but instead, he kept the 3rd pick and selected 20 year old University of Central Florida striker Romario Williams.
A native of Portmore, Jamaica, he is described by scouts and insiders as very fast and athletic, good at holding up the ball to create space for others as well as being good in 1v1 situations. With a Generation Adidas contract, his salary will not count against the cap.
He was a member of the Jamaican U-17 squad and has already received call ups to the senior team. His career at UCF was very good, finishing with 17g & 5a over the last 2 years.
His addition will be a welcomed one to a team that is so thin up top, and unless there are more deals to come, he could very well be given every opportunity to make the first team. With only Jack McInerney really ahead of him on the depth chart (at the moment) . it is not out of the realm of possibility that Romario could find himself playing first team minutes to start the season.
A couple things that stood out for me during his speech was his excitement and passion. "I knew they were interested in me from the get-go...I'm ecstatic" he also went on to send a message to the fans "To the fans of Montreal:I'm here and I'm ready to work hard. Bonjour Montreal!"
To the newest member of the Montreal Impact I say....Welcome to Montreal Romario! One Love!
