It was a bitter-sweet evening for Alphonso Davies in Bremen.
The young Canadian star received his marching orders in the 79th minute as his Bayern team-mates held on to their slender one-goal lead to clinch a 30th Bundesliga title, a German record. It is also their eighth-in-a-row!
Davies had been yellow-carded earlier in the game but his second offence looked somewhat harsh. A free-kick, yes, for his block on Veljkovic, but hardly a yellow card offence.
Still when already on a yellow every player knows to be careful and referee Harm Osmers, had little hesitation in producing a second yellow, followed by red, for the Canadian.
It’s not the first-ever red card experience for Davies, who was harshly given a straight red in a game for his country against Jamaica in September 2017, when the payer was only 16 years-old.
Robert Lewandowski’s solitary strike, two mins before half-time turned out to be enough for German powerhouse, Bayern. Now they head into the DFB Pokal Final in a few weeks time against Bayer Leverkusen, as champions.
Davies has contributed significantly to Bayern’s successes this season, appearing so far in 28 Bundesliga games, scoring 3 goals and providing 4 assists. His yellow-card count up until this evening’s game with Werder Bremen was 2.
