We’re now at the business end of the competition, with day 2 of the quarter-final stages set to commence.
Evan Bush who has been polling exceptionally well in topping Group A before emphatically seeing off the challenge of Marco Donadel, may have bitten off more than he can chew when it comes to today’s opponent.
Chelsea legend, Didier Drogba made a significant impact on Montreal, after arriving at Stade Saputo under great fanfare in 2015, and would always be one of the favourites to win such a contest. Simply put, he may well be the biggest global sporting superstar ever to ply his trade in Quebec.
So it’s a tough one for Evan, but Impact fans will appreciate his longevity with the clubs and that will guarantee a fair share of the votes. Whether it will be enough, it remains to be seen.
The last quarter-final between Hassoun Camara and Ambroise Oyongo is a really difficult one to call. Interestingly both men emerged from the Group stages only as runners-up, but they have reached this stage of the competition by defeating Laurent Ciman and Saphir Taider, respectively, in the Round of 16.
Both of those contests were very tight affairs, and this quarter-final is expected to be no different.
The fact that Camara spent longer at the Impact than the Cameroonian may just swing things in his favour.
The winner of the Bush/Drogba clash is almost certain to meet Patrice Bernier in the semi-finals. Bernier has a commanding lead in his quarter-final against Davy Arnaud.
It’s almost certain as well that Nacho Piatti will prevail over Marco Di Vaio in the other on-going quarter-final, and therefore lies in wait for the winner of Camara/Oyongo in the semis.
