MLS Week 2 in review: Shouts from the technical area

Key lessons from the week's MLS games. What coaches must think and what the results mean for Mauro Biello, the Impact's coach.

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

The only certainty in MLS is the total lack of predictability. Every week brings its surprises … and that’s a good thing. Here’s a look at the season’s second week games and what they might mean for the Montreal Impact.

Orlando City SC 1 - 1 Chicago Fire:  a very dull game

What the managers were yelling: "shore up the defense on set pieces" … Adrian Heath was mad a Brek Shea who had a terrible game … Paunovic will see better days in Chicago.

What Mauro Biello thinks: "We can beat them …"

New England Revolution 0 - 0 D.C. United

A very tactical draw in the worst possible way.

Coaches yelling: "get the ball wide …" The midfield was too crowded with few players of exception to create space.

What Mauro Biello thinks: "With our midfield clicking ...we’ll create chances in the lanes against these two teams …"

Montreal Impact 3 - 0 New York Red Bulls

Piatti: exceptional again...the Impact’s midfield: dominant and Ciman-gnifique on defense …Montreal on the rise,

Jesse Marsch: "Baah is having growing pains but I believe in him …"

Mauro Biello: "Great work boys … a few things to sort out defending set pieces still. "

Real Salt Lake 2 - 1 Seattle SoundersA killer late goal

Replacing Oba Martins: not an easy task.

Coaches: Kassar = "Press higher"

Schmidt: "heartbreaker at the end ...otherwise, not a bad game"

What Mauro Biello thinks: "I’ll get to the Western Conference in due time …"

Colorado Rapids 1 - 0 LA Galaxy

Stars in the Galaxy not quite aligning yet… although Jelle Van Damme will be in the running for defender of the year.

Mastroeni: "I love the clear (rarefied) air of Dick Sportings Goods Park ...and thank you Marco Pappa …"

Arena: "How do I get more from Gerrard? "

Mauro Biello’s reaction: "I think we can run the Galaxy’s midfield ragged …"

Philadelphia Union 2 - 1 Columbus Crew: MLS Cup Blues

MLS Cup finalists are winless so far … a typical Eastern game: middling and milling about ...

Berhalter: "Things will turn around"

Curtin: "Blake … my man ! " … the Union’s young goalkeeper was the real man of the match.

What the Impact’s coach is thinking: "We’re top in the rankings but the Crew are still scary …"

Houston Dynamo 5 - 0 FC Dallas : What Derby?

The Texas derby that wasn’t ...only one team showed up. The disappearing act by Diaz and Castillo was worrying for Dallas.

Owen Coyle: "Me laddies ...that’s how you show characterAndrew Wenger … I love you!"

Oscar Pareja: "I didn’t think we had a bye this week …"

Mauro Biello is thinking: "Dallas will want revenge on the weekend; we better be prepared ...Have you seen Didier around ? "

Sporting Kansas City 2 - 1 Vancouver Whitecaps

Another defeat for the CapsSporting Kansas City looked very strong even with Feilhaber not present.

Vermes: "Movement boys ! Movement …"

For Carl Robinson: "Keep your composure on the ball … build the play up from the back …"

Mauro Biello’s take:"I’m sure glad we’re in the East! "

New York City FC 2 - 2 Toronto FC : Wow!!

An exciting game ...full of mistakes but entertaining. The Reds showed tons of character which is a good sign for a team that needs to rely on more players than just Giovinco. A team like NYCFC needs a real stadium …

Vanney: "Come on ref! You’ve got to call that hand ball on Villa in the box."

Vieira: "Ah les Boys ! Use space ...oh wait, there’s none at Yankee Stadium" ...Ah Pirlo ...such a master at passing … i’ll overlook the defensive side though …"

What Mauro Biello thinks: "TFC will be a tough opponent but we can bother them with our speed and skills wide and then cut in space in the middle …"

San Jose Earthquakes 2 - 1 Portland Timbers

difficult start for the MLS Cup winners. Wondo does Wondo and Amarikwa with an outstanding piece of vision and skills. Jack Mac does his thing late in the game.

Caleb Porter: "I sure hope Ridgewell’s hamstring gets better quick!"

Dom Kinnear: "Keep running the channels … run in between the centre backs!"
