After Week 33 of MLS action, the Montreal Impact did not get the results it needed, to make it to the MLS playoffs right away. Les Bleus will need to travel to Toronto, to face Les Rouges or Toronto FC at BMO field. It was an exciting weekend of soccer, proving that there is as much drama in a playoff race than in a race for a Ligue 1 or EPL title.
There is no PSG or Real Madrid battling their respective foes for a league title. But there is a total of 5 Eastern Conference teams , that are currently battling for 3 spots to make it to the 2013 MLS Playoffs.
New England Revolution vs Columbus Crew : 3-2 thriller
That game could not be more frustrating and dramatic for all parties involved. The Impact were minutes away from being guaranteed a MLS playoff spot but a young talented Revolution team took it to the next level. Kudos to Columbus Crew that still played the game with the intent of winning it.
Even if mathematically in before that game, the Crew was the team furthest away from making the playoffs. The good news is that Columbus will want to avenge their defeat by playing the Revolution at home.
Chicago Fire vs Toronto FC : Magee MVP Candidate?
A controversial penalty kick was all that Mike Magee needed to score his 20th goal, tying Marco Di Vaio for the 2013 MLS golden boot. Toronto FC did not help the Impact (again) but is a much more solid team and Montreal will find it hard to beat the Reds at BMO Field.
Chicago is repeating its run of 2012 to squeeze into the playoffs. Is Frank Klopas saved if his team is playoff-bound? Probably not but Mike Magee is adding more and more points to this MVP candidacy, something he would trade for a playoff appearance in 2013.
Houston Dynamo vs New York Red Bulls : Henry and co. want the Supporters Shield
It started with a gorgeous goal by Tim Cahill that basically killed off Houston, after 7 seconds of play. The Dynamo had 87+ minutes to get back into the game but the Red Bulls were just too strong and too focused.
With a 1 point lead over Sporting Kansas City for the Supporters' Shield, the Red Bulls could also help Montreal by beating the Chicago Fire.
What does the Impact need to do?
Win , Win and Win.
Three points guarantees a spot in the 2013 MLS playoffs for Les Bleus. Only the Union and Montreal have games on Saturday so why not put more pressure on the others to fight for their playoff lives.
Anything else than a win and the Impact depend on Sunday's result to go their way. Tune in later this week for more statistics , scenarios and probabilities.
