The Montreal Impact announced on Tuesday that defender Nelson Rivas underwent successful surgery to treat a micro fracture in his left knee.

Rivas will be out of action for approximately five months, but will be ready for the start of next season.

"It's unfortunate to lose him for the last three games of the season, but we felt this was the best time for him to get the surgery," said Impact sporting director Nick De Santis. "We want to ensure that he comes back in full form to reclaim his starting spot as central defender next season."

The 29 year old Colombian was the first player to join the Impact in MLS, signing on October 2, 2011, following his time with the prestigious Italian club Inter Milan from 2007 to 2011.
