They rarely get it wrong you know... but CF Montreal fans will be hoping that Britain’s bookmakers are barking up the wrong CHERRY tree when it comes the appointment of the next AFC Bournemouth manager.
Two of the country’s biggest firms, SkyBet and William Hill have Thierry Henry currently listed as short as 1/8 and 1/6 on, respectively, to become the next man to fill the hot-seat at Dean Court.
Early favourite and current caretaker manager, Jonathan Woodgate best-priced second-favourite at 8/1 is clearly still in with a shout, but drifting in the betting and you tend to think he’ll only get an offer should the French World Cup winner not.
Other names in the betting include -
David Wagner 12/1 (SB) 18/1 (WH)
John Terry 20/1 (SB) 12/1 (WH)
Patrick Viera 20/1 (SB) 16/1 (WH)
Frank Lampard 25/1 (SB) 20/1 (WH)
Eddie Howe 25/1 (SB) 16/1 (WH)
Tony Pulis 25/1 (SB) 25/1 (WH)
Harry Redknapp 25/1 (SB) 33/1 (WH)
Karl Robinson 33/1 (SB) 25/1 (WH)
Rafa Benitez 33/1 (SB) Not listed (WH)
You can also get 50/1 about Roy Keane, Steven Gerrard or Sol Campbell, and if you fancy a bigger outsider, 66/1 on Joey Barton or Sven Goran-Eriksson.
The bookies have been wrong in the past too of course, but not very often, and when it comes to such a short-priced favourite as Henry is now, hardly ever.
Perhaps Olivier Renard should be be ringing round the names he’s identified as potential ‘Henry-successors’ without delay.
Knowing the CF Montreal Sporting Director’s penchant for thoroughness and organization, he’s already doing that now!
