In the Impact’s nine year tenure in MLS, eight opposition players have been involved (goals & assists) in at least 10 goals against the club...
So who were the hitmen that Impact fans came to dread?
Well there are a few obvious ones, of course, and top of most people’s list would come the Toronto duo of Altidore and Giovinco!
And not without reason. The American with 12 goals and 6 assists (all comps) has been involved in more goals against the Impact than any other in MLS history. Giovinco is not far off in the rear view mirror however, just one behind with 10 goals and 7 assists.
If the Impact had only signed the Italian when they had the sniff of a chance...
But neither of the Toronto men can claim to have top-scored against the Bleu/Blanc/Noir. That honour goes to former Norwich City striker and Sierra-Leonean international Kei Kamara, another who at times was rumoured to be headed to Montreal throughout his lengthy career.
Kamara managed to breach the Impact rearguard on no fewer than 14 occasions (adding three assists), playing for four different clubs, which I believe in itself is also a record.
Others who’ve been a constant thorn in Impact sides over the years and some who may surprise, include Federico Higuain (Columbus Crew, 8 goals, 5 assists), Diego Fagundez, New England, 6 goals, 6 assists), Kelyn Rowe (New England, 6 goals, 5 assists) and the ‘ever-popular’ Dominic Dwyer (Sporting KC & Orlando, 10 goals, 0 assists).
But who has been the most potent?
If you are so inclined you can tip your hat to any and each of the seven mentioned already, although I suspect there’s one or two you’ll pass on, but every one of them pales into insignificance when you consider the immense goals to games ratio of one Thierry Henry.
Yes indeed, the most potent striker the Impact has ever faced in MLS is current manager Thierry Henry. In 5 appearances Henry found the back of the net 9 times (only once at Stade Saputo in a 1-3 defeat in 2012, the rest at Red Bull Arena). The Frenchman also contributed 4 assists for a goal involvement total of 13.
The ratio of 2.6 goals per game is unlikely ever to be bettered, or at least as CF Montreal fans we hope not!
So there you have it! No-one comes close.
Henry the most potent!
