As the Montreal Impacts waits for Ignacio Piatti to come to his new home, the Argentinean offensive midfielder has a huge game against Nacional in first leg of the 2014 Copa Libertadores final.

Rumours out of Argentina are saying that Ignacio Piatti might break his contract to play the second leg of the 2014 Copa Libertadores. But the offensive midfielder is expected to join the Montreal Impact in the next few days after playing his last game as San Lorenzo player; since FIFA rejected the Buenos Aires' request for an exception.

But the good news for the Impact and its fans is Piatti's performance in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores final against Paraguay's Nacional.

Via SBNation's Kevin McAuley

The visitors dominated the first half and were unlucky not to take the lead heading into the locker room. Emanuel Mas hit the post in the 31st minute off a square ball by Montreal Impact-bound winger Ignacio Piatti, and it wasn't Piatti's last contribution. He was San Lorenzo's best player in the first half, forcing Nacional keeper Ignacio Oscar Don to make multiple saves.

Mauro Matos scores San Lorenzo at the 65th minute, after a nice play by the visitors. But in the final moments of stoppage time, Julio Santa Cruz gets the equalizer for the Paraguayan club in front of its home fans and gives hope to Nacional for the second leg in Buenos Aires.

Unless you get to see a plot twist that can become a saga, the Impact is expecting Piatti to join the club sooner than later as await for confirmation from the MLS club.

Ignacio Piatti finally joins the Montreal Impact as a designated player.

After months of speculation and a " long process" as per the club, the Montreal Impact has finally made it official that Ignacio Piatti has joined the club. The Argentinean offensive midfielder is the club's third designated player in its MLS history. After Hernan Bernardello's departure to Cruz Azul, the Impact will only have 2 designated players on the pitch.

The deal will be finalized upon receipt of his international transfer certificate and passing a medical exam. Piatti will only join the club after San Lorenzo's run in the Copa Libertadores. Piatti might come to Montreal as a champion but will not don a bleu-blanc-noir jersey before the month of August.

Piatti has previously played in Europe with AS Saint-Étienne, Ligue 1 in Italy's Serie A with Lecce.

Montreal Impact sporting director Nick De Santis

To be able to get another DP is another important step for the club. It was a long process but we're excited to bring him here. We've said since last year that we wanted an offensive midfielder and we are adding today a very good player, at the prime of his career, who was a catalyst for San Lorenzo in their last championship and their run in Champions League. He's very motivated to play in MLS and to be in Montreal.

Ignacio Piatti has been given permission to join the Impact after San Lorenzo's run in Copa Libertadores.

Reports from Argentina seem to confirm that Ignacio Piatti is a Montreal Impact and that the club is giving permission to its "new player" to stay with San Lorenzo to play the Copa Libertadores. Considered irreplaceable, Piatti has led San Lorenzo with 3 goals and 26 shots in 10 games the prestigious South American Champions League.

The Impact has not neither confirmed nor denied that Piatti has been signed as a Designated Player under MLS roster rules. But this report from Ole.com seems to assume that it's a done deal. Whether the health of the player after the Copa Libertadores is a pre-condition to officialize his signing is pure speculation. But if Piatti has been signed by Montreal, one must think that an injury that occurs during the tournament might not make Joey Saputo and Nick De Santis happy at all.

The #PiattiWatch continues and Piatti gives you a thumbs up.

Montreal Impact target,Ignacio Piatti, is not on the preseason list of Argentinean club San Lorenzo.

As we wait for official word on the imminent signing of a designated player, the rumors surrounding Ignacio Piatti's signing with the Montreal Impact have picked up steam. Not confirmed by the club, Joey Saputo did hint that a signing was happening soon enough and it would probably be "a player that was talked about in the media".

Since then, TVA Sports confirmed that Piatti was in town recently to meet the club and try to finalize a deal.

San Lorenzo, Piatti's club current club, is preparing its preseason and the Copa Libertadores semi-final against Bolivian club Club Bolívar. The offensive midfielder is currently not on the preseason squad that is currently gearing up its preparations at Sofitel la Reserva Cardales, just outside of Buenos Aires.

With one more game in MLS before the World Cup break, the Impact can stay in the race for a playoff spot with a win against D.C. United.

Back to back Canadian champions, the Montreal Impact have gotten an even bigger boost after retaining the Voyageurs Cup. After a 2-0 shutout against the new Eastern Conference powerhouse, the New England Revolution, Montreal is close to avoid becoming irrelevant in 2014 and make a run for it after the 2-week break.

We still have a long way to go in the season and now we are right there. But I think the confidence of winning some games is making us even stronger.-Frank Klopas

With an important game against D.C. United on Wednesday evening at Stade Saputo, le Bleu-Blanc-Noir has a chance to enjoy the World Cup break, watch their idols play in Brazil with the peace of mind that the club is still in a hunt for a playoff race. Add to that a potential CONCACAF Champions League conquest, including two games against the New York Red Bulls, the sun is suddenly shining at Stade Saputo, or almost.

Moves: Better late than never

Nick de Santis and the club as a whole were deservedly blamed for an inactive off-season that only saw an unknown Uruguayan striker, Santiago Gonzalez, join the club. Add to that the Nelson Rivas debacle and a back-line that needed help, new blood and more depth.

The Departed & The Newcomers

Heath Pearce: He came in as a solution for the vacant left-back position but injuries and squad rotation instilled by Frank Klopas, the ex- Chivas USA defender has been an excellent utility player and a veteran at the back.

Jack McInerney: The Impact traded Andrew Wenger for Jack-Mac and the club has obviously won the trade when it happened and still does: Three goals in seven MLS games and fits in any system and formation Klopas decides to use.

Mamadou Futty Danso: The ex- Portland Timbers central defender finds a friend and compatriot in Sanna Nyassi. Whether he represents depth or is a starter, the Gambian international will help a fragile back-line but also a young back-line that will need to be rotated.

Mechack Jerome: The Haitian right back seems more like a depth move for the CCL but we never know what he can bring.

Issey Nakajima-Farran: Collen Warner went the other way to Toronto FC. The winger/midfielder was part of the spark that ignited the Impact in its 2-0 win over the Revolution. He has been motivate to prove Toronto wrong and find a home in MLS. Quality player.

Andres Romero: Missing In Action for one year since joining the Impact, Romero has found a new life and is playing excellent football for the past 3-4 games. If he can continue to be effective, dynamic and intense, the Argentinean will be important for club.

Have you noticed that the keyword around this mini-evaluation has been depth? It's something the Impact lacked since joining MLS in 2012. It will be interesting to see how the coaching staff handles it.

He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named

Ignacio Piatti should be joining the club anytime soon. Joey Saputo confirmed that a deal has been finalized with a third Designated Player that will be a game changer for the club. If it's not Piatti, the fact that Saputo used the words '' game changer'' is a sign of how confident he is about the work done by the technical staff and Nick de Santis.

Another rumor is going around twitter that the club is in talks with Gaetano D'Agostino, a midfielder playing for Siena in Serie B.

According to @NicoSchira #IMFC still in talks with Gaetano D'Agostino, can @impactmontreal pull off a "doppio colpo" that would be sweet...

But before the club signs Neymar or Cristiano Ronaldo, Montreal will focus on its next adversary and will hope to enjoy the World Cup with 13 points and 3 points closer to a playoff spot.

A bad start to the season is only the tip of the iceberg for the Montreal Impact.

The Frank Klopas era has been shrouded in a cloud of negativity and defeat. With only one win to show for in 2014, fans have expressed anger, discontent and a thirst for heads to roll. The Montreal Impact's self-proclaimed biggest fan, Joey Saputo , did not think twice when he expressed his dissatisfaction, following the 3-0 loss to Sporting Kansas City, in his own house, Stade Saputo.

As I said many times here and on Soccer Sans Frontières, the MLS version of the Impact was built on short-term objectives, at least on the pitch.

The club is reaping the short-term rewards of a vague sporting project that includes building the club with an European culture and an European style of play, that seems to include a technical game.

Like I said, vague.

Going back to Joey Saputo's promise of guaranteed changes, the club's options are not infinite and some of them will just not happen. Knowing the passion of the club's president, changes are coming.

Some of them were already planned and the president is using the latest results to give more power to his upcoming decisions. Other changes are still in the process of being dissected and evaluated.

#FireKlopas

A ship is only as good as its captain and Frank Klopas has not been be able to steer the team away from rough seas. Nine games into the season, the new coach still seems to be juggling around with his lineup. But was Klopas handed bad cards from the beginning?

A recurring theme during the 2014 preseason was the Impact's lack of an Impactful transfer market. The signing of Santiago Gonzalez and Nelson Rivas has neither added depth on the bench nor given significant minutes on the field.

How much time does Frank Klopas needs to built the team to his image? It all depends on how influent he is as the Director of Player Personnel or as I like to call it: The Schallibaum Clause.

Barely into the first year of his 3-year contract, Klopas is going nowhere. As much as Joey Saputo made it clear that he can make it rain and pay as many coaches as needed (still paying for Jesse Marsch and Marco Schallibaum), I doubt that the club will pull the trigger and get rid of another philosopher.

#FireDeSantis

Nick De Santis is the architect of the club and has been under fire. Blamed by the Ultras Montreal for the Impact's problems, his track record has not been the best. He gets credit for bringing in important players like Marco Di Vaio, Hassoun Camara and Matteo Ferrari but has not shown the ability to get new blood on a yearly basis.

Though the trade for Jack McInerney was seen as a good move, it will take time to see JackMac's impact on the pitch.

With a squad that is lacking depth and a purpose on the pitch, the Impact's bad start of the season was predicted by many. This crisis should not be a surprise but it is still shocking to observe how bad is the team performing.

Sources close to the situation have confirmed to MRS that Alessandro Nesta was even considered to come in and join the technical staff. Was it to replace De Santis or work alongside him?

If you remember, during the first annual Members General Assembly, the club did announce that it is considering to create a VP of Soccer Operations position.

#FireDeSantis is doubtful to happen but is Joey Saputo considering to move him within the organization and leave room for others ?

#FireThePlayers

The most likely solution, trading/releasing/signing players is the best tool the club has. It's time for the club to shed itself of bad contracts and under-performing players that cannot evolve within the framework of the club.

The squad is on the older side but some '' younger'' players just don't display enough intensity on the pitch. It's all about the right fit.

This is the best time for the Impact to ask itself the following question: Who do I want on my team when the 2015 season starts?

Expect the club to shed some dead weight and free up some space to be more flexible within the salary cap. Rumors have already suggested that Ignacio Piatti will join the Impact by June-July 2014. An addition of a true offensive midfielder is key to the club.

But the Impact still needs to create a real sporting project beyond just winning games and making the playoffs.

Winning is the result of a plan, not the plan itself.

Piatti currently plays for San Lorenzo de Almagro in the Argentine Primera Division. The midfielder also has played professional football in Europe with Saint-Étienne and Lecce. He came back to Argentina from Italy for a reported fee of €1 million.

The potential signing of Piatti would be good news for both Impact fans and the coaching staff. Since joining the league in 2012, the Bleu,Blanc,Noir has never had a real offensive midfielder with a knack to score goals. As per secondary scoring, Montreal has depended on a streaky Felipe Martins and the perfect penalty kick record of Patrice Bernier.

As it is most probably Marco Di Vaio's last year, the Impact needed more options offensively. Criticized for a quiet off-season in player procurement, getting a player of Piatti's caliber is a needed boost on and off the field.

Until Piatti's potential arrival during the summer, will the Montreal Impact still be in a playoff race? Until then, Frank Klopas will need to get his team on a winning streak and focus on the squad of players available to him.

Midfielder, winger or goal scorer? Probably all three
