Résultat : 2e but des Quakes (Marvin Chavez).

Davy Arnaud - 5

A humiliating 3-0 defeat to the San Jose Earthquakes has all but eliminated The Impact from Concacaf Champions League. Let’s try and find a little bit of’ The Good’ and examine all of ‘The Bad’ from the loss.

The Good...

Alessandro Nesta - When everything was crumbling around him, the Italian defender did his best to hold up the fort. It didn't help him that his compatriot and fellow centre back, Ferrari, was having another dreadful night. Kudos to Nesta for showing some pride and fighting for the full 90mins.

MLS Campaign- All questions regarding the Impact's focus can be put aside now. The club will now concentrate solely on their MLS run. They should in theory use the last CCL game against C.D. Heredia at Stade Saputo as an opportunity to rest the overused veterans and play the youngsters.

Follow @Danny_Ribs

The Bad...

Matteo Ferrari - That's two games in a row that Ferrari has had a strong say in the outcome of the match with some dreadful defending. He inexplicably decided to stand and watch Steven Lenhart head the long thrown in to Chris Wondolowski for the opening goal.

Is the normally reliable centre back going through a slump or is he showing signs of fatigue from the lack of backline rotation?

Daniele Paponi - Against the Columbus Crew, I harshly placed Paponi in The Bad for being invisible in his 20mins of substitute play and failing to provide a spark. Well, I have no qualms about his play versus the San Jose Earthquakes. Paponi out did his previous performance and managed to be invisible for a full 60mins.

His only noticeable mention was when he mis-hit the ball alone , following a rare positive build-up between Romero and Wenger. A lot more was expected and needed from the loaned forward.

Andres Romero- Not as bad as Paponi, but except for a solid 15mins at the end of the second half, the Argentine had another disappointing outing. He failed to create anything positive from the left wing and often losing the ball to easily.

Like Mount Royal Soccer on Facebook

The Ugly...

Andrew Wenger - I half heartedly tweeted during the game if Wenger was the Impact's version of the once promising Habs prospect and now cut Louis Leblanc. The reference being, that this latest performance might be looked back in the offseason as the nail in the coffin between Wenger and the organisation.

Nothing was working for Wenger, not the finishing, the ball control or the passing. It all led him to being the first player to land in The Ugly. The only positive for Wenger is that he does give a visible effort and Impact fans know he can give a bit more then what he displayed.

Share your thoughts, Impact fans. Who impressed you? Who did not? And better yet, what did I get wrong?

Our attitude was good and we deserve better tonight. However, we knew that they were good on set pieces and we made a couple of mistakes that cost us. It's a difficult loss to swallow because we fought hard.

Montreal Impact Midfielder Patrice Bernier

We created enough chances in the first half where we could have tied the game or gone ahead, but we were not efficient enough around goal. Then in the second half, we weren't as dangerous and they took advantage to double their lead. After that, the game opened up and they found a third goal.

The Montreal Impact travel to California to face the San Jose Earthquakes in CONCACAF Champions League action. A win against the Quakes would place the Impact tied for first place with C.D Heredia.

In the middle of a battle to secure a MLS playoff spot, the Montreal Impact travel to the Bay Area to face the San Jose Earthquakes. This time, both teams will play in the CONCACAF Champions League group stage. This is the third time that both clubs face off, twice in the CCL.

Losing 2-1 at home to the Columbus Crew, the Impact play against a San Jose team that has found its stride under Mark Watson. In the last 5 games, the Quakes have a record of 2-1-2 and will be looking to take that momentum into the Champions League. Both clubs did lose to C.D. Heredia in Guatemala as the Guatemalan club leads the group with 6 points.

The San Jose Earthquakes can get back into it with back-to-back home games in the CCL. Its target would be the Montreal Impact and calling this game crucial is an understatement. Anything but a win will eliminate the Quakes from the competition.

On the other hand, the Montreal Impact is aiming for a win , or at least a tie. Taking all the big guns with him, Marco Schallibaum wants to get maximum points. Let's not forget that C.D. Heredia still needs to play in San Jose and Montreal. Next Wednesday, the Guatemalan club and group leader is coming to Stade Saputo next Tuesday (Sept. 24th).

What do we know

Collen Warner is suspended and the Big Guns made the trip. Marco Schallibaum might field his strongest starting XI to go all in against San Jose. The players understand the importance of the competition, especially after winning the Voyageurs Cup. Managing the players physically and mentally will be key, especially with a 6-hour flight to get to California.

Patrice Bernier

The key is to rest. We need to be rested and fresh. We all have the responsibility of making sure the legs are ready to go for the upcoming stretch and the key will be rest and regeneration.

What can we expect

A hydrid squad of starters and bench players but up to a point. I don't expect Schallibaum to take a risk to either start Nesta or Di Vaio at the same time. My logic behind this is around opportunity cost. Which is riskier to lose to an injury as the season comes to a close?

Aiming for a top 3 spot in the Eastern Conference, even if Nesta is important to the club, keeping Marco Di Vaio healthy is essential to the Impact's survival.

Now, injuries can happen anytime but the 2-1 loss to the Columbus Crew was hard to take for the club. Shaken but not demoralized, Montreal can mix and match a solid squad.

What is more concerning was how dominant was San Jose when it lost 1-0 to Montreal at Stade Saputo. Even in a loss, the Quakes played very well with a B team as it played the best starting XI that Montreal could field.

If Mark Watson decides to field a stronger squad than last time, Les Bleus would find it hard to get a result at Buck Shaw Stadium and Patrice Bernier evokes that from the team's hotel in San Jose

San Jose may come full force Tuesday night, putting their focus on the Champions League as the season has been tougher for them.

It's all about the result at the end and the Impact need to forget about Columbus and focus on San Jose. The game will be broadcast live on Sportsnet and TVA Sports. at 10:00 PM EST from Buck Shaw Stadium.
