Jeb Brovsky scores his first career MLS goal in a losing cause. On his goal, the play was so beautiful and smart that it also becomes frustrating.

Jeb Brovsky has finally scored his first MLS goal in his young promising career. The multi-purpose player has been a physical and mental rock for the club. The natural midfielder has been filling as the full-time left back for the club, since joining the Montreal Impact in the 2012 MLS expansion draft.

Let's take a look at how the original Jebi Knight got to score that goal from start to finish.

Two-man midfield

Patrice Bernier does what he does best. The MLS All Star keeps the ball from harm's way as he is pressed by a D.C. United player. He quickly identifies Davy Arnaud as his next target with a simple but precise pass. Kudos for captain Davy Arnaud to move higher up the midfield to offer options for his partner in crime.

Justin Mapp: L'Effet Mapillon

Credit to @Solambey , my colleague at @SoccerSansF, for inventing the term to better describe Justin Mapp's impact on the pitch. L'effet Mapillon (Mapp + Papillon, butterfly in French) is simple, efficient and deadly. He slowly gets away from his marker and hugs the sideline.

Davy Arnaud looks for him, passes him the ball and makes a run towards the box, taking with him Perry Kitchen. That run gives space for Jeb Brovsky to take Arnaud's spot and Mapillon passes the ball to him. : as easy as pie.

Follow @MtRoyalSoccer

Tic-Tac-Toe :

Without hesitation, Brovsky gives the ball directly to Arnaud who gets back onside. He temporarily becomes Brovsky control tower. Three DC players surround the captain but are not in movement, making it that much harder to defend the give and go between Arnaud and Brovsky.

Arnaud goes ''Neymar'' on everyone and flicks the ball to Brovsky who never stops his run.

Jeb with the finish

Sneaking between 2 DC United players, Brovsky does not control the ball and shoots directly from inside the box. Joe Willis tries to cover as much space as he can. But Brovsky's cheeky and precise low shot beats the goalkeeper.

Notice Marco Di Vaio's important presence around the penalty area as he is covered by 2 defenders. He also makes a last minute dash to free himself, in case Brovsky goes for the pass.

It was a beautiful play that lasted 10-11 seconds with a total of 8 touches and 5 passes ; enough to decimate the Black & Red. From start to finish, the Montreal Impact scored yet another goal culminating from a team effort, sprinkled with a high level of technical skills.

The frustrating part of that equation is the Brovsky's scores his first career MLS goal in a losing cause. What is more frustrating is how can the Impact play so well in less than 11 seconds and be so imprecise and untidy for most of the game.

Marco Schallibaum's challenge is to harness those skills and make them work together and not just on one play per game. Without demanding form the Swiss coach to create the FC Barcelona of MLS, the team has shown that it can create something from nothing.

How do you take that mentality and those positive intentions from that goal , and also from Blake Smith's goal, and re-create them throughout a game?

What is your favorite part on that play?

The Montreal Impact came back from the nation's (US) capital with zero points. Jeb Brovsky scored his first career MLS goal but it was not enough to beat a brave D.C. United team.

The Montreal Impact leave RFK stadium with 0 points, continuing the winless streak at D.C. United's home stadium. Jeb Brovsky scored his first career MLS goal but like he says, he would have taken all 3 points instead. Marco Schallibaum has more questions than answers , after leaving RFK, as the club plays a CONCACAF Champions League midweek fixture against the San Jose Earthquakes.

Quotes

Montreal Impact Head Coach Marco Schallibaum

On whether this game is a missed opportunity:
"Winning on the road is a hard thing. Especially in the first half, we concede the first against a team that has endured bad results. Then we scored to make it 1-1, but as a phase we should not have conceded the second one. It was at the wrong time and then it was difficult to come back."

On the performance of D.C. United:
"I think MLS is very balanced. Ben [Olsen] has a good team also. They forced many turnovers today, and they were more aggressive than us, you see from the yellow cards and offsides. You must be ready every time in MLS, and I think we were ready but perhaps not enough to make the break."

Montreal Impact defender Jeb Brovsky

On the defeat:
"It hurts inside. As much as you love winning, you hate losing."

On his first MLS goal:
"I would have traded that goal for three points. Hell, I would have traded it for one point. I'm happy that I got my first goal, but that goal didn't get us any closer to the playoffs, so I'm not satisfied.

Montreal Impact midfielder Justin Mapp

On whether the defeat tonight hurts more than others:
"Yes, it does make a difference, the loss. With the team we have, we expect three points. It's disappointing."

On conceding the second goal:
"We got back in the game but then went down again, which is frustrating. At 1-1, you feel like you have more life and you're not chasing the game. Going down a goal definitely changes things."

On what is needed to get back on track:
"Just win games. I don't think there's one right answer."

Montreal Impact midfielder Davy Arnaud

On the effect of D.C. United's second goal:
"The second part of the first half was better, then we started the second half well and scored a good goal. Then we conceded a second one and our reaction from their second goal was poor. There's no other way to describe it. We always need to be honest with ourselves in terms of when it's tough or when things don't go well. OK, we concede the second goal but we still could be in the game. The way that we reacted, we didn't deserve to get back into the game. It was like we were hoping instead of going out and making something happen."

On whether Montreal's players were mentally prepared for the game:
"To win, especially on the road, I don't care who you're playing, you've got to have 11 guys who are up for it and ready to grind out a result regardless of who you're playing. I thought we had it in spurts at the end of the first half and then we got the goal because we were playing well. But then we conceded a second and it went away. As a group, our reactions were not good."

On how hard it is to be consistent across a 34-game season:
"It's hard to win 34 straight games. What should be there, what should consistently be there is a willingness as a group in good moments and bad moments and to have the same attitude and approach and the same commitment and attitude to go about things in the right way. It doesn't mean you're always going to get the result but that consistency needs to be there. You're not going to win every game, I think everybody knows that. But in terms of us and the way that we approach the game, from the first minute to the last, we have to become more consistent in that department."

Montreal Impact goalkeeper Troy Perkins

On the game:
"We had the conversation with the Head Coach [Marco Schallibaum] during the week about how even when a team has so few points they're still a quality team. At the end of the day, things just haven't gone their way and you see tonight they're a capable team who come out and are willing to fight. Against them, we didn't quite fight and this is what happens.

On D.C. United as a team:
"To be fair, they played well tonight. With [Dwayne] De Rosario back in the lineup, they look sharp and they look dangerous. We couldn't manage big chunks of the game well so we have to come out and be better and come out with a little bit more edge to us. We came out flat."

On the response after conceding the second goal:
"The way that the second goal comes is too easy. It's an easy ball in and then the guy's [Conor Doyle] all by himself. That's happened to us too many times now and the reaction was not good. Too many guys quit."

On why results have been poor in recent games:
"We have to be mentally tougher, it's as simple as that. We've got to be stronger and we can't have these kind of lapses. And when we do, we have to be able to get through it."

-----

D.C. United Head Coach Ben Olsen

On the result, overall:
"It was one of those nights where everything you wanted to get out of the game happened - getting those guys out at the right time and then those subs...I thought the subs did a great job. All three of them put in really good shifts - obviously [Conor] Doyle with the goal and the assist, but [Sainey] Nyassi gave us a real spark. Collin [Martin] was really fun to watch, too. For a youngster getting into a tough game late, I thought he was very composed and it was just fun to see him out there."

On building momentum ahead of an Open Cup semifinal on Wednesday:
"We were looking to get two things out of tonight: first was getting a winning mentality, so this [win] will help with that. We're also looking to get a rhythm because - I don't want to mention injuries - but DeRo [Dwayne De Rosario] and Luis [Silva] hadn't played together. Perry's [Kitchen] back in. We're trying to get all these guys to log as many minutes together as possible, so it's strange to say over halfway through the season that we're still trying to find our rhythm and the way we want to play, but that's the case. Tonight, we tweaked it a little bit. We put Perry [Kitchen] defensive and more central, rather than a two-way mid and I thought it, at times, looked good. There were some holes and miscommunication - in particular that second part of the first half, they broke us down a couple times. I thought we started very bright the first 20 minutes. We were aggressive - the way our outside backs went about the game, to me, was probably the difference in the way we played."

On Conor Doyle's performance off the bench:
"He scored a goal and had an assist, so it's a good start. He's a nice pick-up. We haven't used him as a sub, so it was nice to see that he can do that for us. Whether that is his role or not in the future, I'm not sure. But it's nice to know that he has the mentality to come in and change the game."

On Dwayne De Rosario and Luis Silva's partnership:
"I thought it was good. The first 20 minutes were very good. We put a lot into that and then we got a little stretched - [Montreal] took over the game for that second part. But overall, it was pretty good. They're very likeminded players, so the trick there is spacing and making sure we can stretch their center backs at times...That allows them to continually push their line because there's no real threat high. When we did that, I thought [De Rosario and Silva] were good. Again, that's the first time [they played together], so you need four, five or six games together to really get that understanding. Saying that, I was very pleased with it."

On playing Joe Willis tonight in goal instead of Bill Hamid:
"Joe [Willis] got us into the Open Cup semifinals and I'm going to play him on Wednesday - I'll tell you right now. It has nothing to do against Bill [Hamid] and the faith that we have in him. I wanted to get Joe one more game going into Wednesday. And I thought he had a pretty good game."

On the positive impact the outside backs had on the result:
"We had the ball more. You have to have possession to really allow your outside backs to go. I think we match up well against Montreal. The fact that they didn't press us very high, we had a little bit more time to get that possession and build a rhythm out of the back. Our outside midfielders did a great job of tucking in and making them make tough decisions. In particular, [Chris] Korb has to realize that he's a good player. When he reminds himself that he's fast and that he's a good talent, he's going to make it and he can be a starter in this League. And I thought we saw that tonight. He was just aggressive and confident and he has to continue with that."

D.C. United forward Conor Doyle:

On how it felt to come on as a sub and score:
"It's what you want to do when you come on as a sub and that's to be an impact player and score a goal, and I was able to do that, so I was happy. That was my first official professional goal so it was a pretty happy moment."

On the communication between himself and James Riley on the near post run:
"We have been working on it all week. We talked about it in film where the first guy needs to make a hard run to the near post to create space behind, and it just so happened that James put the ball in the right spot and I just put it in the back of the net."

On how it felt to score his first professional goal:
"It's been a long time and a tough road. I've been frustrated and down a lot, and to be able to go get that first professional goal is special."

On how this builds for Wednesday:
"Obviously, to get a win is good. It builds team morale and to go into Wednesday with a win is a big confidence booster for us all. Going into a semifinal with a win behind us is a big deal for us."

On the contribution from the new faces on D.C. United:
"[Luis] Silva has been great since he's been here. Scoring three goals in three games is pretty impressive. For Jared [Jeffrey] and I to get on the score sheet tonight is special since we're both from Dallas. Getting fresh faces in changes things up a bit and gets the team going again, so it's been a good injection of different faces."

D.C. United midfielder Luis Silva

On how it felt to play with Dwayne De Rosario:
"It feels great. He's a smart player, a good player and he's looking for me and I'm looking for him. The more we play together, the better the chemistry is going to get between us, so that's a good thing."

On the work of Conor Doyle coming on as a substitute:
"He's a good player. He did what he has to do and that's score goals, and tonight he did a fantastic job of putting that goal away and a great assist as well."

On how it feels to score three goals in three games:
"It's a great feeling. At this moment, it's me scoring but I know other teammates are going to step in and then it will be there turn. As long as we win, I'm happy and that's what was good about today, we won. At the end of the day, that's all that matters to me."

On how the new, young faces for D.C. United have helped the team:
"It's just changed the team chemistry, and we have young bodies with coach's confidence to come in and produce and play our game. There's nothing better than that. Today the three new guys came and we all scored a goal and that's pretty special."

On the flair the team created today:
"We created a lot of opportunities and we're attacking from different sides of the field and it makes everything easier for me and our other players."

D.C. United midfielder Jared Jeffrey

On how it felt to score a goal:
"It's a good feeling. Not just the goal, but also the win. The whole second half was big. Scoring that second and third goal was important, and we talked about getting a lead and being aggressive and not just sitting back. At the end of the first half we got caught sitting back a little bit and I thought we responded really well. It was the same story as last week as we went up 1-0 and gave up a goal, but we were able to turn it around and get the last two goals."

On the feeling of combining with Conor Doyle on his first goal:
"It was a great feeling. I was a little worried he was going to shoot it being the center forward he is, but it was great. Just running over to the corner and celebrating with the guys was a special."

On thanking Conor Doyle after he scored:
"Yeah, I had to thank him, to be honest. He could have scored and I could have passed it back to him, but he gave me that one for sure."

On his thought of Conor Doyle's contribution off the bench:
"I thought he brought a lot energy and he made some good runs. We got the ball in some good spots and made good crosses but just him making that near post, which we talked about all week to drag defenders, he did a great job with it."

On the moment when he and Doyle scored their first goals on the same day:
"Absolutely it's special because I think we will look back on this day and laugh about it. Right now the focus goes to Chicago and hopefully we can get a win Wednesday."

On how this win gives D.C. United momentum going into Wednesday:
"Coach [Ben Olsen] was talking about getting into a good rhythm and having a winning mentality and I think it's a great thing for us to experience winning and gain confidence going into a mid-week game."

On how it feels to have young players contributing:
"It's great for not only me but for all the guys. I thought in the second half we were combining with Nick [DeLeon] and and Kyle [Porter] too and they did a great job, and [Luis] Silva is pretty young too. But it was fun tonight being out there with all the guys and we hung tight and got the win."

Never would I have thought to see the Montreal Impact and D.C. United be total opposites in form, in the standings and aspirations.

DC United is not even close to the team I expected during my 2013 predictions. Two goals away from being in the 2012 MLS Cup final, the Black & Red sits last in the Eastern conference, last in all of MLS. With only 10 points before facing the Impact, D.C look like an easy target for Montreal.

But there is no easy game in MLS and as much as it sounds more cliche than anything else, it is true. The Montreal Impact's 1-0 win against Sporting Kansas City was huge when you look at the Eastern conference standings. Even if it was against the best team in the league, it still was not impressive looking back at the team's overall play.

The good news is that D.C. United has been horrible this year. The bad news is that the D.C. United is not as bad the standings say. Montreal has not won once at RFK Stadium since joining MLS. On one side is a team that just broke a 5-game winless streak. On the other, the host team is in the middle of a 5-game winless streak.

Every Game Counts

Everyone will be looking at the standings, at the end of each MLS week. This week will not be different , au contraire. Some results will help Montreal, others will not. But the biggest focus for Marco Schallibaum is to get his troops to stay focused on DC.

The club should not even think about having games on hand. It can definitely tone down the sense of urgency that the club needs to be in to start a winning momentum.

1 - Sporting KC 36 pts : vs NY

2- New York Red Bulls 35 pts : vs SKC

3- Montreal Impact 35 pts : vs D.C United

4- Philadelphia Union 34 pts : vs Chicago

5- New England Revolution 30 pts : vs Toronto FC

6- Houston Dynamo 30 pts : vs Columbus Crew

7- Chicago Fire 25 pts : vs the Union

Something Old

Marco Di Vaio vs Dwayne De Rosario

Both offensive stars are older, experienced. You either help them flourish or try to shut them down, depending where you stand. Even if the Impact might be looking to counter attack at RFK stadium, Di Vaio is still the main target to score goals or at least generate offensive sparks.

De Rosario has been unhappy with the lacklustre performances of his teammates and was not shy to share his thoughts. He is still a talented player and will be looking to bring some life back to the 2012 Eastern Conference finalists.

Something New

Luis Silva vs new-look defence

Luis Silva is enjoying getting more playing time since being traded from Toronto FC. With Nick DeLeon and Perry Kitchen, Silva should be right at home playing alongside young players. The difference is that D.C. United's young players have talent.

Hassoun Camara should be back as a central defender as Alessandro Nesta did not make the trip due to injury. Will we see Karl W. Ouimette get some playing time? or just assume that Dennis Iapichino will start as the left back.?

Go for the Swiss but I don't like and I hope to be wrong.

Something Borrowed

Is Ben Olsen on borrowed time?

The young head coach seems to have the full confidence of the club to continue as the big honcho. With the playoffs being more of a mirage, Olsen will be focusing on how to get his younger players to the next level. It's not a easy task to motivate experienced players to join in a developmental cycle, half-way through the season.

Something Blue

Nothing blue to declare except for the Impact jerseys. But one must hope that Les Bleus will not get the road trip blues as they need to prepare a mid-week CONCACAF Champions League game against the San Jose Earthquakes.

We start the preview of the game between the Montreal Impact and D.C. United with Adam Taylor of Black & Red United.

Adam go at it as we exchange questions and answers about the teams that we respectively cover. After a huge win against Sporting Kansas City , the Montreal Impact travel D.C to face a horrible D.C. United team but Marco Schallibaum is not looking to take anyone for granted.

You can read my humbles answers to his questions right here.

We also ask Adam about the future plans of the club as per the transfer market, the 2014 MLS Draft and the impact of the new announced stadium on the soccer culture around the club.

1. So I predicted the Montreal Impact to finish 4th or 5th in the East assuming the club stays healthy. That prediction included D.C. United being in the top 3-4 of the Eastern Conference.

Please, please tell me that I was not crazy to think so? Tell me that you did not predict the Black & Red be so bad this year?

Well, recent events would indicate that you're crazy. But also that I and many other MLS pundit-types (is that what we are?) are similarly afflicted. I'd say a majority of people who watched last season closely expected United to contend for the Eastern Conference crown this year, what with attacking talent like MLS Best XI Chris Pontius, a healthy Dwayne De Rosario and a Nick DeLeon with a year of experience under his belt.

Not to mention the stellar defensive partnership of Dejan Jakovic and Brandon McDonald in front of beastly Bill Hamid, all screened by a rapidly maturing Perry Kitchen. Hell, even Chris Korb was getting plaudits for his play at fullback. But virtually every one of those players regressed - some of them dramatically - from last season, and the departures of Andy Najar, Branko Boskovic, Hamdi Salihi and Emiliano Dudar were not adequately replaced.

Throw in some injuries and a tough schedule (that approached impossibility once the team's confidence was shot), and you have yourself a major league fall from grace that very few saw coming.

2. Soccer Culture or Culture Foot like we like to say in French. With D.C. United just announcing a new soccer-specific stadium, is this taking the club to another level financially? on the pitch? How is this transforming, changing the soccer culture in D.C and Virginia?

Financially? Absolutely, this is a game changer. The team is among the biggest money losers in MLS when they play at RFK, which has no luxury boxes and provides the team no revenue from concessions or parking (all of that is claimed by the city). Add in the rent the team has to pay for each event, and it's simply not sustainable. The new stadium will beat the situation at RFK in every one of those categories (not to mention fan experience and the buzz factor we've seen in other places like Kansas City).

On the field, there's a line of thought - and it makes a lot of sense - that the new digs will make it easier for United to attract top line talent that is simply not within reach at the lovely ol' dump that is RFK. Listen to Claudio Bieler talk about the facilities at Sporting Park or Tim Cahill on Red Bull Arena or Diego Valeri on Jeld-Wen Field, and you get the impression that the first rate, brand new facilities made their decision to sign with MLS a lot easier; the same could be true for the future of D.C. United.

As for soccer culture in the D.C. region (and don't forget Maryland in there!), I think the aforementioned buzz could help make soccer - which is already pretty relevant in the area - even bigger. A state-of-the-art building can do wonders for public perception, and the possibility of moving the NWSL Washington Spirit into the city (they currently play way out in the suburbs) and of seeing a greater number of U.S. national team games will boost things, too.

One potential enforced change from the current culture, though, has to do with parking: RFK stadium has lots of it, and eventually, the new stadium won't. This is going to push supporters to find a new way to tailgate before games, whether it be in public plazas or in the bars and restaurants that many of us hope will populate the area in and around Buzzard Point. It's a trade-off I have no problem accepting, though.

3. Ben Olsen still looks he can still play the game. Was he named head coach too soon in his career? With recent trades and roster changes, is D.C. United going for the 2014 MLS Draft top pick while looking for an actual effective D.P (Rafa-who?)

I thought Ben Olsen was the right guy for the job at the time, and I still do. The club was in total crisis during Curt Onalfo's short time at the helm, and turning to somebody who understood the club and its history and its supporters was something that needed to happen.

To their credit, the front office has stood by that decision, even through this woeful year, saying that Olsen will have the time he needs to develop as a coach. Of course, that wasn't the plan at first: When Olsen retired as a player, he was named to the staff as an assistant coach, a position it was thought he would occupy for some years as he learned the craft. Onalfo's incompetence accelerated the process considerably, pushing Olsen into the head coaching ranks much earlier than anybody had planned or hoped.

At this point, he may still have some naivete, and his tactics aren't always spot on, but Olsen's ability to manage a locker room is off the charts. All that said, I think we will need to see some progress on the field between now and the end of the year before we can say with any confidence that Benny will be back for 2014.

Speaking of 2014, that #1 SuperDraft selection is looking more and more secure. With a few very strong Generation Adidas candidates appearing likely to be available at both forward and central defense - two huge areas of need for D.C. - it's going to be some small consolation for the pain of this year. Rumors of scouting trips to Europe and South America by United staff haven't resulted in any big signings as of yet, but with the relative failure of most of the club's designated players - Marcelo Gallardo, Luciano Emilio (v.2), Branko Boskovic, Hamdi Salihi, Rafael Teixeira de Souza - one hopes that the team will do its due diligence before committing that kind of money and salary cap space to any one player.

That said, the recent roster moves are encouraging; some of the best teams in the league year after year are those that build on a core of skillful, American (read: cheap) talent. Bringing in the likes of Jared Jeffrey, Conor Doyle and Luis Silva definitely puts the Black-and-Red in a better position than they were in a month ago.

The hope is these kind of moves - of which we hope more are coming - will be enough to put United back into the ranks of the competent, leaving the question to be what sort of player would put D.C. over the top and back into the contenders' conversation. But I'm getting ahead of myself; right now the short-term goal is simple competence.
