Ahmed Hamdy has not yet made an appearance for Montreal, but he is looking forward to potential participation in the 2020 Tokyo football tournament taking place between the end of July and beginning of August later this year.
Although not involved in any of the qualifying games, Hamdy is on the fringes of the Egyptian squad that successfully acquired an Olympic berth by winning the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations.
He was involved in two u23 games last November against South Korea and Brazil, and indeed faced Montreal midfielder Djordje Mihailovic in Egypt’s 2-0 success over the USA two years ago.
Egypt were drawn in Group C along with former gold medallists Spain and Argentina. Australia make up the quartet.
All the African nations were handed tough draws, with South Africa in with Canada’s conquerors, Mexico. France and hosts Japan make up the group. Meanwhile Cote d’Ivoire will meet each of the finalists from the last Games, Brazil and Germany as well as Saudi Arabia.
Group B throws up an interesting and diverse quartet with no two countries coming from the same confederation: New Zealand, South Korea, Honduras and Romania.
