Following hot on the heels of four CF Montreal players being called up by Canada yesterday for the upcoming u23 Olympic Games qualifying tournament taking place in Guadalajara, midfielder Djordje Mihailovic has been selected in the USA’s 20-man squad, named today.
He could face James Pantemis, Zachary Brault-Guillard, Zorhan Bassong and Ballou Tabla if both countries emerge past the group stage.
There will be a USA v Canada semi-final should either country win its group and the other finish runner-up in their’s.
The USA are in with Costa Rica, Mexico and the Dominican Republic, while Canada’s path looks only slightly easier with Honduras, whom they have never beaten at u23 level, Haiti and El Salvador standing between them and progress.
Mihailovic will be looking to add to his tally of two u23 caps. He has played for the USA full international side six times.
All five players could be off to the Olympics in the middle of July. Both finalists in the Guadalajara tournament win automatic qualification for the Games.
A sixth Montreal player who could be implicated come July is Ahmed Hamdi, whose country, Egypt, has already qualified for Tokyo from the African zone.
