It’s unlikely Olivier Giroud (34) will end up in MLS with the Montreal Impact or any other club in 2021.
His lack of opportunities this season so far at Chelsea has alerted French national team boss, Didier Deschamp, who told the player he must sort out his playing situation to avoid compromising his national team future.
Playing in Euro 2020 next summer is dear to the former Arsenal striker’s heart, and he won’t see playing in MLS as a platform from which to impress his national team boss.
Giroud who stated he almost joined Tottenham in January, will be seeking a top tier club in one of Europe’s top five leagues. After the Euros, then who knows? MLS could be a destination, but you’re looking at the tail end of 2021.
For his part, Frank Lampard said today he hopes the French international will remain at Stamford Bridge, however added should Giroud deem his future lies elsewhere, Chelsea wouldn’t stand in his way.
“I do have plans for Oli, he is very important in our squad. He was very important last year, played a lot of games and made a lot of starts. He’ll always want to play more but he’s a huge member of the squad for me.
“I have a very good relationship with Oli and if ever he felt that it was going to go a different way then I would happily have that conversation with him.
Giroud has made four league appearances as a substitute this season for a total of 41 minutes with Lampard favouring Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham. With Giroud’s contract set to end in June, his agent had suggested recently that the forward could seek a move away from Stamford Bridge in the January window.
“I saw Oli’s agent’s quotes and didn’t really think much of them. I understand that he wants to play, but for me it has to be about the strength of the squad. I think he has a big contribution for us,” said Lampard.
