Speaking on TSN690 today, Thierry Henry insisted his team’s planning and preparation for the play-off match-up with New England Revolution on Friday evening, does not currently involve Victor Wanyama.
However the Impact coach has not ruled out a slim possibility that the former Tottenham midfielder might become available for selection.
“The league is working on something but I don’t know what, so something might happen. But we must plan ahead without Victor.”
Of course there’s always the player’s fitness to take into account. Wanyama captained his country last Wednesday and again yesterday as they drew and lost respectively to Comoros in two African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
There will also be travel fatigue and possibly complications. Returning from the tiny Indian Ocean island nation probably doesn’t present the most convenient travel options, so even if Wanyama has departed this morning to come back to Boston (presumably) and is given the green light to play by the authorities, how will his body feel?
Clearly if the Kenyan is available and even at 80%, Henry is likely to include him in his line-up, or at least on the bench.
Meanwhile we must wait to see if MLS can work something out with the respective authorities.
