The Montreal Impact get a 0-0 tie against the Philadelphia Union: A Dull Dangerous Affair

The Montreal Impact stay on top of the Eastern Conference, after a 0-0 draw against the Philadelphia Union. PPL Park was never kind to the Montreal Impact but a point away from home might be what the doctor just ordered.

The good news is that Troy Perkins was excellent with a few saves. The bad news is that Troy Perkins was the main highlight for the Impact, not usually a great sign for a team. Both teams were coming off a combined 11-goals in their respective games as Montreal was quiet offensively and the Union the most active on that front.

The biggest chances came from Jack McInerney, who arguably had an average game. His strong shot ,from outside the box, forced Perkins to punch it out but Sebastien Le Toux almost got a clear shot from the rebound. Later in the second half, at the 77th minute, McInerney gets a free header, right in front of Perkins, but he misses wide.

The Montreal Impact focused on keeping a defensive formation, even though the Union were dangerous with a total of 27 crosses in the attacking third. Marco Di Vaio scored '' an offside '' goal , at the 61st minute but should have counted if only Felipe let go of the ball earlier.

Justin Mapp was the most dangerous player for Montreal as the ex-Union player had his long range shot saved by Zac MacMath. The goalkeeper could not smother the rebound and Di Vaio pounced on the rebound and shot it wide. The Italian striker was offside on that play.

Montreal Impact assistant coach, Mauro Biello, was happy that the team earned a point in Philadelphia, while praising the team's defensive mentality on the road

The last five games on the road were really hectic for us and tonight we didn't give up many chances. We were solid defensively and this is a great building block to move forward.

Hassoun Camara confirms what many thought as the Impact was hoping to be efficient on the counter attack. It almost happened but the defensive performance also satisfied the versatile Camara.

We displayed a lot of maturity tonight and we were sound defensively. We created a few counterattacks but could not finish them. This is a good point against a good team. It's a positive for the last stretch of the season.

Montreal goes back home and will enjoy an extra's day rest as it plays the New England Revolution next Sunday at Gillette Park. As we speak, the Impact sit on top of the east, tied in points (42) with Sporting Kansas City and the New York Red Bulls.
